JP Smith: City of Cape Town won’t tolerate unruly road behaviour during Easter weekend

As the Easter weekend holidays approach, the City of Cape Town says no one who breaks the law is untouchable on the Mother City’s roads.

According to the city, on average, over 50 public transport vehicles get impounded for traffic law violations every day.

The city added that the impounding of the vehicles is the only effective action that works as some taxi drivers ignore fines and continue with the bad behaviour.

The city’s MMC for safety and security, JP Smith said, driving behaviour remains one of the top complaints to the city particularly so with the driving behaviour of the public transport sector, specifically the ‘amaphela’ and minibus taxis who can often be reckless and put the lives of their passengers and other road users in danger.”

Smith added that traffic officials issue over 200,000 fines a month with the majority of these issued to ‘amaphela’ and minibus taxis.
