Joshlin Smith disappearance: DNA update to be heard as accused back in court

The State in the Joshlin Smith kidnapping case will on Monday morning give an update on DNA tests performed on the 6-year-old’s clothes.

The little girl disappeared from her family home in Middelpos in Saldanha Bay in February.

Her mother, Kelly Smith, and three others have been charged with her kidnapping and will return to court on Monday.

When Kelly Smith last appeared in court, along with Jacquen Appolis, Steveno van Rhyn, and Lourentia Lombaard, the State requested more time to wrap up its investigation.

However, police said DNA analysis from a jersey found in a field near Middelpos on 31 May had still not been completed.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the State was not ruling out the possibility of the accused applying for bail after they initially abandoned their bid.

NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila indicated if the accused brought an application for bail, the State would oppose it.
