It is alleged that a known suspect approached her vehicle and fired multiple shots, leaving her critically injured.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that Makwela’s son and a bystander were also caught in the crossfire and sustained injuries.
“Officers Makwela’s son and a bystander were also shot during the incident. They sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. The Sandringham SAPS [South African Police Service] attended to the crime scene and opened a murder case for further investigation to probe the motive for this heinous crime.”
Suspect Remains at Large
Police have identified the suspect, but at this stage, no arrests have been made. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the suspect’s identity, but investigations are ongoing.
The JMPD has assured the public that they are working closely with SAPS to track down the perpetrator.
“The suspect is allegedly known but still at large. The JMPD [Johannesburg Metro Police Department] is working with SAPS to provide all necessary support in their investigation,” added Fihla.
Residents of River Park, Alexandra, have expressed their shock and fear following the brutal killing, with many calling for swift justice and increased police presence in the area.

Investigating the Motive
While the exact motive behind the targeted attack remains unclear, authorities are exploring various leads, including the possibility of a personal dispute or work-related retaliation.
Makwela’s murder has sparked concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers, particularly when they are off-duty and vulnerable to attacks.
Criminals often target police officers, seeing them as threats to their operations, or seek revenge for past arrests and investigations.
Investigators will now look into Officer Makwela’s cases and professional history to determine whether her murder could be linked to her law enforcement duties.
A Growing Concern for Police Safety
The murder of police officers has been a growing concern in South Africa, with several incidents of targeted killings reported over the years.
The South African Policing Union (SAPU) and Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) have both called for better protection measures for officers, particularly when they are off-duty.
Many police officials have previously raised concerns about insufficient protection, especially for those who deal with high-profile cases or gang-related crimes.
Speaking on the increasing attacks on officers, a security analyst warned:
“Criminals are becoming more brazen in their attacks. They see police officers as obstacles and, in some cases, may target them to send a message.”

Call for Justice
As the hunt continues for Makwela’s killer, her family, colleagues, and community members are calling for swift action to bring the perpetrator to justice.
JMPD Chief Thulani Khanyile extended condolences to Makwela’s family, describing her as a dedicated and hardworking officer who served her community with honor and commitment.
The police have urged anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in the investigation.
“We appeal to the public to report any information that may assist in tracking down the suspect. Justice must be served,” said an SAPS official.
As authorities continue their investigation, many are hoping that Officer Makwela’s murder will not become another unsolved case but instead lead to a conviction and closure for her grieving family.
Conclusion
The brutal murder of Officer Judith Makwela has once again highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, both on and off duty.
With her killer still at large, the police and JMPD are under pressure to ensure justice is served swiftly.
As South Africans mourn yet another fallen officer, questions continue to be raised about what more can be done to protect those who put their lives on the line to uphold the law.
The community of River Park, Alexandra, remains hopeful that this senseless killing will not go unpunished and that Officer Makwela’s legacy of service will be honored with justice.
