Some Joburg residents take to the streets over prolonged power cuts

Some Johannesburg residents took their frustrations over prolonged power outages to the streets, intending to put pressure on the city to light up their households and businesses.
A group of Yeoville and Bellevue residents marched to City Power’s Doornfontein Depot on Saturday morning with the hope that electricity would be restored.
The community has been plunged into darkness multiple times in February outside of scheduled load-shedding hours.
On Friday, City Power implemented emergency load rotation for the area in an attempt to relieve the strain on the Bellevue substation.
Community member Dennis Webster said there had not been a day without an unplanned outage in Yeoville since the start of 2024.
“More than 100,000 people are essentially losing their food, [and] businesses are shutting down. You can’t imagine that residents in Sandton and those in the suburbs north of Johannesburg are being put through what Yeoville is going through.”
