DA picks Mpho Phalatse for Joburg mayoral candidate

The Democratic Alliance (DA) multi-party coalition partners cried foul after the decision to put Mpho Phalatse as its mayoral candidate – without consultation.

The party said the coalition collapsed when Phalatse was voted out as Johannesburg Mayor in January.

She was replaced by Al Jama-ah’s Thapelo Amad who announced his resignation from the position on Monday night.

The DA’s Gauteng chairperson, Fred Nel, said there’s no need to complain, because there’s no coalition in the metro.

“There have been no negotiations around positions, but the DA has decided to put up Mpho Phalatse as our candidate. We would like other parties to support us, and should she win, then we will engage in coalition negotiations.”

The DA was heavily criticized for refusing to support suggestions from other parties in its coalition.

Nel however, said his party was willing to support other political parties.

“We’ve always negotiated with them in good faith. They haven’t approached us about any positions they would want us to support them in Joburg and they’re welcome to approach us and we will be willing to talk to them about it.”
