Joburg Mayor Gwamanda heaps praises on his administration amid imminent no-confidence motion

Facing an imminent motion of no confidence Johannesburg executive mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has praised his administration for stabilizing the city after inheriting a crisis.

He said the government of local unity – the coalition led by the African National Congress and Economic Freedom Fighters – has made positive strides since taking power from the Democratic Alliance earlier this year.

Gwamanda was speaking at the site of the Riverside View Social Housing Project on Friday – where 180 houses were declared ready for occupation.

ActionSA said the City of Johannesburg lacked direction under Gwamanda’s leadership.

However, Gwamanda said the social housing project is another example of how his administration was making progress in changing people’s lives.

Gwamanda said it’s very difficult for the city to provide affordable housing to everyone in Johannesburg, as the city has a large influx of local and international migrants.

“The government of local unity inherited a city that was in a crisis financially and otherwise, but we have turned that around. We rescued our city from tyranny and subjugation of the poor.”

The motion of no confidence vote in Gwamanda is set down for next Thursday at the Johannesburg Council Chambers.
