R120 billion needed to fix Joburg infrastructure

R120-billion — that’s how much it will cost to fix the City of Johannesburg’s water infrastructure.

That’s according to Zakhele Khuzwayo, Manager for Innovation & Technology at Joburg Water.

The city is hit by periodical supply outages, leaving large parts without water for days on end.

It means basically that old infrastructure, which should have been replaced, has not been done so for a long period of time,” Khuzwayo said.

“According to our equations, it looks like something about R120-billion. It’s huge and it’s growing every year.

“I think for 2021/22 it was R103-billion and within a single financial year you shot up to close to R120-billion.”
