JMPD cautions motorists in Soweto & Roodepoort amid floods
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said Soweto and Roodeport were among the areas that were most affected by the heavy rainfalls.
The department said they received reports of sinkholes appearing in some roads in parts of Roodepoort, while some low-lying bridges were washed away in Soweto.
Several roads across Gauteng are closed off due to the flooding.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said motorists should be extra cautious on the roads.
“In Soweto, Moroka Nancefield Road between Mcube Drive and Klipspruit Valley Road in Dube, and still in Dube, a tree has fallen on the road on Mzilikazi Street and one lane is closed off. Orlando West Mtipa Street is flooded and has been closed off between Khumalo and Maseli Street.”
Meanwhile, Johannesburg emergency management services (EMS) rescued a man who almost drowned near a bridge in Soweto.
The man was spotted hanging on a tree by residents while his vehicle remained submerged.
Eyewitness News spotted the roof of another red vehicle floating in the middle of a river in Protea Glen, Soweto.
A man said rescuers using a helicopter told them that they could not access the vehicle because it was still raining heavily.
He, like others on the site, believed there were bodies still trapped inside the vehicle.
“I think these people are crossing the river as part of their normal commute to work but their vehicle was washed into the river by the heavy rains. We are wondering as to whether or not they survived, but the car is still floating in the river.”
However, the EMS’ Xolile Khumalo said they did not record any fatalities.
