Cameron Dugmore: JJ Tyhalisisu’s election as Western Cape ANC chair was unexpected

The ANC’s Cameron Dugmore has admitted that the election of JJ Tyhalisisu as the Western Cape’s new provincial chairperson was “unexpected”.

Dugmore, who was the favourite going in to the election at the provincial conference at the weekend, received 282 votes compared to Tyhalisisu’s 311 in a tightly contested race.

Speaking after the election on Sunday, Dugmore said it was an interesting scenario.

“It was very close. Quite an interesting situation where our former convenor Lerumo Kalako stood down and there was a nomination from the floor. So, it was quite unexpected at some levels. But that is the internal democracy in the ANC.”
