JSC to interview nominees for position of Chief Justice

Interviews for the head of the judiciary begin on Tuesday. Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Supreme Court of Appeal President Mandisa Maya, and Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo are all vying for the position.
Alison Tilley from Judges Matter described some of the things the candidates can expect in the interviews.
“The position is one which has so many different facets where normally you would expect to see something about the candidates experience, people will be asked about their integrity, leadership skills so there’s a range of things that we would see normally asked in an interview for a judicial position,” she said.
“But with the Chief Justice you would imagine you would have to go a bit further into issues around temperaments and commitment to the rule of law, integrity, independence so there’s different weights attached to these things when it’s a chief justice although these things are equally important for a judge broadly but especially for a chief justice.”
