Intense cold front bearing down on SA – where will the snow fall this week?

The snow forecast for the week ahead is creating a buzz in South Africa and, depending on your perspective, it’ll either bring a frozen wonderland or a winter of discontent to our doorsteps. A majority of provinces are set to receive a smattering of the white stuff as temperatures plummet across the nation.

SNOW FORECAST FOR SOUTH AFRICA, JULY 2020
Several specialist extreme weather outlets – including SAWX – have mapped the upcoming snowfall. According to the professionals, the first few flakes will make landfall on Thursday evening and some blizzards could persist until Saturday morning (if the early forecasts remain accurate).

“A cold weekend is coming up for most South Africans. A significant amount of snowfall, even disruptive in parts, looks very likely from Thursday night or the early hours of Friday morning for the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and even in Lesotho.”

“Snowfall is also possible for the high-grounds on the border of the Free State and Mpumalanga. This is an advanced forecast so variables like the areas and amount of snowfall are likely to change at some point.”

WHERE WILL SNOW FALL IN SOUTH AFRICA THIS WEEK?
It’s also looking like the Western Cape will receive a fair amount of snow, too. Anton Bredell is the provincial minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning. He’s revealed that a severe winter storm won’t just bring snowfall – but heavy rain and fierce winds can also be expected.

“The latest weather warnings by the South African Weather Services indicate the next severe winter storm is on the way and expected to make landfall from Thursday evening.”

“The storm is predicted to bring heavy rain and strong, damaging winds to large parts of the province. In addition, very cold conditions are expected in the province, including snowfall over the mountains. These conditions are expected to continue to Saturday.”

COLD FRONT TO INTENSIFY BY FRIDAY
Snow Report has claimed that up to 40mm of snow will fall upon the highest peaks of South Africa’s mountain ranges over the upcoming weekend – and snow-chasers are advised to follow all current travel laws.

Ventusky, meanwhile, has mapped where the snow is most likely to settle on Friday morning, too:
