An infant that was found abandoned in a toilet in Polokwane on Saturday has been taken to hospital.
The baby, who was left in the restroom of a food store, was found wrapped in a blanket at about 1pm.
It’s not known how long the infant had been there before he was found.
Police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said officers responded quickly after they were told about the abandoned baby.
“We have launched a massive manhunt for the infant’s mother.
“The motive for this heartbreaking incident is still unknown, but the ongoing investigations will reveal all the facts,” he said.
He said a case of child neglect was opened at Polokwane Police Station.
Ngoepe refused to give the name of the shop where the infant was found.
“The matter is still sensitive.
“We cannot give the name of the shop.
“We hope the team that is investigating this matter will arrest the mother soon.”
Anyone with information that could lead to the mother’s arrest should contact Captain Martin Thema at 082 451 7155 or send an SMS to 32211.
