Motshekga: Cases of matric exams cheating prevalent at independent schools

The Department of Basic Education said cases of cheating during matric exams are most common at independent schools.

The 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams recorded a total of 945 cases of cheating from Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said scandals of this nature tampered with the credibility of matric exams.

Motshekga said the department is closely monitoring the continued cases of cheating during matric exams in the country.

She said while these cases rarely came from its schools, any wrongdoing was left with the department since the independent schools write their exams.

“Normally, your independent schools whose fortunes rely on being able to boast about good results, so they get desperate.”

Over 900,000 candidates who wrote their exams between October and December 2023 are waiting to receive their results this week.

Motshekga will release the national pass rate on Thursday before the final results are released on Friday.
