Cape Town refugee impasse continues

A four-hour meeting to discuss the impasse with refugees living in Cape Town’s CBD, yielded no immediate solutions.
The City of Cape Town, Home Affairs, the UNHCR, and the South African Human Rights Commission appeared before the parliamentary portfolio committee on Home Affairs.
MPs grilled them on what is being done about the refugees and asylum seekers in Cape Town.
The meeting heard how the migrants continue to disrespect the rule of law and how several meetings with refugee leaders proved fruitless as their demands couldn’t be met.
They will not accept reintegration as an option, fearing xenophobic attacks.
The City of Cape Town repeated that it can’t provide accommodation for the group that was removed from outside the Central Methodist Church.
The City and the SAHRC said that of the group of about 800, some have already returned to communities they came from.
Others who are still living on the street would like to be integrated.
