Two minors have died in Zondi as a result of smoke inhalation from Imbawula on Friday, June 20 and according to Jabulani police reports the children were aged 9 months and 2 years old.
“The whole incident occurred in Zondi, Nxinamba street after a 26-year-old husband to the mother of kids arrived from work and tried to knock and couldn’t get any response, he then decided to visit his brother at Dobsonville and again when he returned hours later, he could not get through to his place.
“When the husband returned in the morning, he found his wife who told him the children are not moving nor breathing and when he looked around, he saw that they were sleeping with Imbawula and he called the ambulance and unfortunately, the children were certified dead,” said Jabulani SAPS captain Sifiso Mabizela.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the children died as a result of smoke inhalation and the mother is currently hospitalized. We acknowledge that they may be electricity outages and we need to keep warm however, we urge the community to careful of the dangers of ‘imbawula’,” Mabizela added.
Imbawula is made from a large tin can with holes on the sides and designed to burn for a long time. It releases toxic fumes (carbon monoxide) when burning and families must avoid putting it inside their houses because it can lead to fatalities.
