Government warns of crackdown on illegal truck drivers

Government plans to crack down on foreign drivers who are working in South Africa illegally.

The joint pledge was by the Department of Labour and Police together with Home Affairs.

It says it’s committed to speed up policy changes in the road freight sector following widespread protests by truck owners and drivers.

The labour department says it will ramp up inspections at freight businesses and penalize non-compliance.

It says road traffic authorities and the police will play a more active role.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union has welcomed the move.
