Calls for unit to deal with illegal mining

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe is calling for a specialized unit within the police to look into illegal mining.
That’s after the bodies of 20 suspected illegal miners were found in North West earlier this week.
“We are in serious discussion with the Minister of Police. Our teams will be meeting on Monday,” Mantashe said.
“I have a proposal that I’ve been consistent with. We will not dissuade illegal mining unless you have a specialized unit in the police service dealing with illegal mining.”
