EMS union say govt is ignoring their concerns

The South African Emergency Personnel’s Union says the government is ignoring its proposal to meet and discuss the safety of paramedics.

This week, two paramedics were ambushed in the eMabhanoyini area, near Escourt.

They were in the back of an ambulance, preparing to rush a patient to the hospital when they were attacked.

One of them died and the union says in most such cases, no one is arrested.

SAEPU’s Mpho Mpogeng said, “the only thing that they’re doing is to have a good media statement to condemn the situation. That is not a solution. The MEC in KZN is never available, the meetings are cancelled.”

“We requested a meeting to share ideas with the MEC, she was nowhere to be found. It seems as if we’re pointing fingers but we are not..we are also challenging minister Joe Phaahla… so that we can see whether these things will work and we’ll minimize the problem.”
