IFP meets VhaVenda leaders during voter recruitment campaign

The two-day Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) voter recruitment campaign in Limpopo ended outside Thohoyandou, with a visit to one of the senior VhaVenda traditional leaders, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli in Sibasa. The IFP has called for legislative amendments to elevate traditional leaders to the same status as government leaders.

The party says this will allow traditional leaders to receive the same protection and privileges as cabinet ministers. IFP national chairperson Blessed Gwala says they will be advocating for the amendment of the Constitution to allow traditional leaders to receive the same benefits as those holding government offices.

“The constitutional laws or the laws that are put by government does not assist the traditional leadership. It is there but is does not say what is the role of traditional leadership in the same way that it happens with the councillors as Members of Parliament or Provincial Legislatures,” adds Gwala.
