KZN man survives after jumping off from Howick Falls

A 35-year-old man, who jumped from the Howick Falls viewing platform at around 3 pm yesterday afternoon, miraculously survived the fall.
According to an eyewitness, the man clambered over the metal barrier and jumped, somehow missing the rocky outcrops immediately below the platform.
It is believed that the man’s fall was slowed and stopped by the many thick trees and bushes which line the gorge.
A quick-thinking municipal security officer immediately called for assistance and some bystanders made their way down to the valley floor to see if they could help.
Within minutes the Saps Search and Rescue and paramedics were on the scene, but before they even started their preparations to rescue him, the man returned to the tourist area via the gorge walk.
He kept asking those around him if they would be taking him to his mother.
The man was helped into a Midlands EMS ambulance where he was treated for his injuries, which included a broken arm and scrapes to his legs.
He was taken to Northdale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.
