How Sam Meyiwa fought till his last breath for #JusticeForSenzo

This week we were hit with the news of Sam Meyiwa’s death and with it an overwhelming sense of injustice that accompanied the sombre moment. The father of the late Senzo Meyiwa passed away without ever knowing who killed his son almost five years ago.

Many believe that South Africans – including Sam – should have received closure about the case that continues to dominate headlines despite its many dead ends. Sam was an outspoken advocate and often called for justice from the police and ministry. He even took several figures to task over their alleged involvement in the crime.

With that in mind, Sam will be remembered for a number of key moments which followed the death of Senzo as well as his pursuit of justice.

Sam was a broken man after Senzo’s death
Nobody was more hurt than Sam after Senzo was brutally murdered in what we believe to be a robbery gone wrong. Senzo and Sam were close and never mind the financial ramifications, this death took its toll on Sam mentally and emotionally.

The official Sam Meyiwa meme
During the dark times, there was one moment which will always make people smile when they think of Sam Meyiwa.

Following Senzo’s funeral, Sam, before driving away from a filled-to-the-brim Orlando stadium, stuck out his head, held his hands wide and thanked the nation for supporting his son.

He didn’t realise that this moment would become a meme-worthy moment for all time.
Sam feuds with Senzo’s girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. Things turned ugly very quickly when Sam directed his anger and all the blame for Senzo’s murder at Kelly Khumalo.

Kelly, who was Senzo’s girlfriend, witnessed the footballer’s murder but Sam believes that she knows more about the crime than she has been willing to say to authorities.

Sam pleads with Police Minister for justice
As the hunt for Senzo’s killers went cold, Sam became increasingly desperate to see justice served for his son’s murder.

In one particularly despairing moment, the father pleaded with then-police minister, Fikile Mbalula to find his son’s killers.

Sam claps back at Kelly again
Two years after Senzo’s death, Sam and Kelly squared off again after Kelly’s media comments struck a painful chord in Sam’s heart.

He retorted at the time; “She has recently said that being in love with Senzo had been a waste of her time. How does she dare speak so ill of my child who died?”
Sam demands answers. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years, but South Africans were still no closer to learning who killed their beloved goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

Sam echoed the nation’s sentiments when he said, “It’s really frustrating for us that after so many years we still don’t know who killed him and why. This makes me wonder about my son’s killers. They must be wealthy and well-connected to be able to hide the truth so well and for so long.” Any guesses who he was hinting at?

Sam’s health deteriorates
We first caught wind of Sam’s deteriorating health in 2018 when it was revealed that he was wheelchair-bound following a stroke. At the time, the family was at its poorest and once again, no closer to finding out who had killed Senzo.
