Hospital staff to face the music for tying patient to a chair

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, says he’ll be taking tough action against Mamelodi Hospital staff involved in the ill-treatment of an elderly woman.

“There’s an investigation that is going on. There is no part of health care that expects patients to be tied up to a chair whatever the circumstances are. Mkhize adds that he is aware the hospital is overrun.

“When patients come to hospital we expect them to be cared for. We are aware that the hospital is overrun, there’s a huge population they’re serving.

A video of 76-year-old Martha Marais tied to a bench, went viral on social media, sparking outrage.

Investigations are still ongoing but Mkhize warns there’ll be consequences.
