Parliament fire suspect to be held in hospital section of prison

Judge Nathan Erasmus has ordered that alleged Parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe be detained in the hospital section of a prison.

This is after Mafe was sent to Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in March for assessment.

Erasmus ruled that the contents of the psychiatric report not be disclosed at this stage.

Mafe is accused of setting the National Assembly on fire in January 2022, causing damage of around R2 billion.

South African soccer star who plays for Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana, Thembinkosi Lorch made headlines on Tuesday, 6 June, when he was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Nokuphiwa Mathithibala.

The former couple made headlines in September 2020 when Sunday World reported that Lorch was arrested for physically assaulting Mathithibala.
