Amazulu and Royal AM might be rivals on the pitch, but not so much off the field. AM boss Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize and AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu joined hands on Tuesday, 21 December, to make a Durban family’s dream come true – just in time for Christmas.
The soccer bosses handed over a new house to the Gcaba family in KwaMashu C section, KZN. And the three-bedroomed house was fully furnished with beds, a TV, stove, and fridge.
SPAR, sponsors of AmaZulu, also handed over groceries worth R10 000 to the family.
Gugu Gcaba, whose house burnt down in April, shed tears of joy when she was given the keys. She revealed how the ordeal had left her and her five children without a proper home.
“We’ve had no electricity and water since 2012. So with the house burning down, our lives changed for the worst.
“I tried all departments and we didn’t get any help,” she said.
Zungu said he heard MaMkhize on Ukhozi FM saying that she’d be building a house for a deserving family as part of celebrating her 20 years in construction.
Then a competition was launched through the radio station, in which different families had to write in.
Gcaba’s story was the winner from more than 20 000 entries received.
“We then said as AmaZulu, because MaMkhize has built the house, we needed to think of something else because they need furniture and other essentials,” he said.
“So we offered to said contribute R100 000 towards furniture and household items. That partnership is important because what it says is that as soccer teams, in the field of play we are rivals but outside, we are collaborators.”
MaMkhize built the house through her company Zikhulise Group, that is celebrating 20 in the industry.
She said she knew the pain of having a house burn down as she once experienced that before.
“I know the pain of not having a house. And at some stage, I had a house burn down and I was left homeless,” said MaMkhize.
“I know how it feels to not have a home, and I felt that I needed to try and give away this house. “I promised the family that they would have Christmas in their new house, and I pushed with everything I can to make sure that I fulfil that promise,” she added.
