Home Affairs to extend working hours for eligible voters to collect IDs ahead of voter registration weekend

Home Affairs has extended its operating hours for the collection of identity documents ahead of the voter registration weekend.

The department says it will open its offices for an extra two hours on Friday, and residents can visit their local branches from 8 am until 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend, the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will roll out its last national voter registration campaign in a bid to get eligible South Africans on the voters’ roll for this year’s national elections.

Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Goza has urged residents to use this opportunity.

“Services to be offered are applications and collection of IDs and applications for temporary identification certificates. With these documents, eligible voters will be able to register for the 2024 national elections…”

For the first time in the history of democratic South Africa, the national voters’ roll has surpassed the 27 million mark.

But the IEC wants to ensure it gets most of the 43 million eligible voters to register.
