A hijacking suspect has been shot dead in Heidelburg, east of Johannesburg, during a high-speed chase by police.

The incident took place on Saturday after two suspects allegedly hijacked a vehicle in Tsakane.

Police said the suspects left the scene with the stolen vehicle before abandoning the car on the highway.

It’s understood the suspects started shooting at police, and one of them was killed in the crossfire.

“The officers retaliated, fatally wounding one of the suspects and arresting one while the other two suspects managed to evade arrest,” said spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
