Herman Mashaba breaks silence in Church

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba celebrates international drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking week with the community of the Ennerdale Church of The Nazarene.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade.

It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989. The observance was instituted by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987.

It is often referred to by Anti-Drug campaigners as 6/26. A play on Marijuana smokers “4/20” day to celebrate cannabis.

Mahsaba said thugs are tormenting communities and emphasized that if the community works together with law enforcement, change is possible.

“We also have a high unemployment rate which can also easily draw the youth into doing and dealing with drugs. We have are still working on having more campaigns and programmes to get the youth off the streets,” said Mashaba.

“Common health issues found in victims may be from substance abuse problems or addictions resulting from either being coerced into drug use by their traffickers or by turning to substance abuse to help cope with or mentally escape their desperate situations. Partnering with substance abuse treatment programs that are also trauma-informed can be critical when developing your victim services committee. Some human trafficking victims struggle with substance abuse, which may have been exploited by the trafficker,” he added.
