The KwaZulu-Natal government called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to send the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to help assist communities that were affected by severe weather conditions.
This request followed the recent heavy rains that hit parts of the province.
The inclement conditions damaged infrastructure, and several people lost their lives.
On Monday, the provincial government visited the families of the victims.
Authorities confirmed that six people, including children, were killed after their homes collapsed.
While some families grieved the loss of loved ones, others were working on picking up the pieces following the devastation caused by the heavy rains.
Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said soldiers were needed to help.
“We have written to the president to ask for permission for resources from the SANDF, particularly the personnel that will help us to clear the roads and the debris, but also to clear the sites and help communities.”
Over 70 homes were destroyed in Mtubatuba alone.
Disaster management teams are still assessing other areas.
