KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the suspects had been on the police’s most-wanted list, linked to multiple violent crimes in the province.
“Officers acted on intelligence that the suspects were travelling along the Mophela Main Road. When officers tried to intercept them, the suspects refused to stop and instead opened fire at police members,” said Colonel Netshiunda.

Colonel Netshiunda revealed that the men were specifically wanted for the murder of a 66-year-old man, who was shot and killed at his home in Ekwandeni on Saturday, 3 May.
Furthermore, police investigations linked the suspects to another violent incident where, in January 2025, an elderly man survived a hail of bullets at his home, only to lose his wife in a separate attack in February 2025.
“The same suspects are also linked to the murders of two police officers. We suspect they could be involved in additional crimes, and investigations are ongoing to confirm these connections,” said Netshiunda.
The police commissioner praised the swift action by law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of removing dangerous criminals from the streets to ensure the safety of residents. Seems the Hammarsdale Shoot-Out brought out a bit of good.
