Video – GTA Johannesburg: Anger as motorist films himself speeding at 320km/h

This is what idiocy looks like: A motorist reached speeds of more than 320km/h this weekend in Johannesburg and was daft enough to film himself doing it.

Even if you’re sat at home, you’ll feel like putting a seatbelt on to watch this video. A majority of the online community in South Africa have been left apoplectic after a reckless driver filmed himself clocking speeds of over 320km/h on the busy R21 carriageway in Johannesburg.

GTA Johannesburg
The vehicle was seen heading towards the East Rand Mall at some point this weekend. The video shows the Nissan GTR weave in and out of traffic and seems to be engaged in a speed race with a biker.

Our thoughtless motorist makes light work of the two-wheeled challenge, as he breaks through the 300km/h mark before eventually slowing down.

It was like a scene straight out of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game series. Fortunately, no-one ended up getting “wasted” this time around – but concerns still remain that this behaviour will be repeated again in the future.

Social media reacts
The video was initially shared by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, who made both the local police and Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula aware of the incident. It has since gone viral, with many Twitter users condemning the behaviour:

However, not everyone believes that the driver should be punished. A few petrolheads immediately leapt to the defence of this rogue speedster, admitting that they’d also like to try the same thing.

Staying safe on the roads
Road safety in South Africa is an issue that is constantly under the microscope. Deadly highway crashes and erratic drivers have turned some of our most popular routes into a dangerous commute.

Behaviour like this does nothing to help the common cause – and rather than the lawbreakers behind the wheel, innocent parties are also made to suffer when it all ends in tears.
