Govt urged to take action to rectify unreliable water infrastructure

The CEO of the South African Water Chamber, Benoit Le Roy has called on government to take immediate action to rectify the eThekwini and Johannesburg municipalities’ unreliable water distribution infrastructure. This after the eThekwini Municipality announced a 12-month-long water reduction plan which will begin next Thursday.

According to the National Department of Water and Sanitation, the city is currently facing a surge in water demand that far exceeds the available supply. A level 1 water restriction has also been implemented in Gauteng to manage the province’s diminishing water supply.

Le Roy says urgent investment is required.

“They’ve allowed their assets to be sweated over 30 years and have not put in anywhere near the investment to keep them adequately managed, so we have to catch up. And the only way we’re going to do that is by some urgent measures, extraordinary measures and attract the capital because we can’t rely on the consumer to pay for all this. We’re talking over R200-billion or the metros, it’s a lot of money. The money’s around in the private sector but the private sector is not ready to invest unless they are assured that the money will go to the right place, at the right time it’ll be repaid.
