Govt to prioritise restoring stability, services in Metros: President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s first speech to Parliament as the new leader of the Government of National Unity (GNU) last night focused on economic growth and job creation.
He also vowed to ensure a massive roll-out of infrastructure and serious intervention in the country’s metros some of which he said were dysfunctional.
President Ramaphosa says in an act that is unprecedented in the country’s democratic history, ten political parties in the GNU have agreed to craft a common programme to build a better, more equal and more just South Africa.
This programme of action is to deal with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. Ramaphosa says the seventh administration’s immediate priority is to restore stability to Metros.
The President acknowledged that the country’s Metros were in a worrying shape. He cited the eThekwini metro in Durban as one of those that had regressed over the years.
“As an immediate priority, we will bring stability to governance in our metros and restore the delivery of services. We have already begun this work. When I visited eThekwini earlier this year, I met with residents of the city, with local business leaders and municipal officials. They told me that they wanted to work together to build a city that they could be proud of again.”
“We have since put in place the eThekwini Presidential Working Group to enhance support from national and provincial government to turn the metro’s administration around, to fix the problems in water and sanitation and [to] attract new investment. We will extend the same approach to other metropolitan cities that face serious challenges. So that our cities can be engines of growth and dynamic centres of opportunity,” adds the President.
On Monday and Tuesday Parliamentarians will debate Ramaphosa’s speech with the President expected to respond on Wednesday.
