Govt clarifies costs of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s flight

The Department of Defence has rejected parts of a Sunday Times report about the cost of President Cyril Ramaphosa‘s flight to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The article says the President flew to Kinshasa on an SAA plane that cost around R2.6 million. However, he had to do so because none of the airforce VIP fleet was serviceable.

However, the Defence Department says the amount paid to SAA was R1.6 million, and that quotes were obtained from several bidders.

It was confirmed that the president’s executive aircraft, Inkwazi, is currently out of commission. The department says 14 passengers went to the DRC, and 55 were on the return flight. These numbers do not include the SA Airforce crew.
