Nomzamo Mbatha appointed as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador

South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha has taken on a new role as the newest Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees).

The star has worked closely with the organisation since 2017 as a High-Profile Supporter and an advocate for UNHCR’s LuQuLuQu campaign, raising awareness for the forcibly displaced in Africa.

In 2018 Nomzamo shared touching images from her visit to Kenya where she met refugee athletes at the Ngong Hills Sports Academy. In the same year the star was also part of the very first TED X talk which was held at a refugee camp. Nomzamo was a speaker at the function which took place at the Kakuma refugee camp

Speaking about a her appointment as Goodwill Ambassador, the star said in a press statement: “The strength of refugees, their ability to persevere and their ingenuity for making the best of a difficult situation is what I celebrate. Being named Goodwill Ambassador is an incredible honour and I can’t wait to embark on this journey, learn more and use my voice to truly be an agent of change.”

Nomzamo’s appointment comes at a time when war, conflict and persecution have forced over 68 million people to flee their homes – the highest level of displacement ever recorded. Over 25 million of these are refugees, with Sub-Saharan Africa hosting over 31 percent of the global refugee population.
