Gold One Mine miners are running out of food

Miners staging an underground sit-in at the Gold One Mine in Springs are running out of food. There are about 400 miners who are at the sit-in.

The protest is against the dismissal of over 50 workers and the recognition of the union, AMCU. The employees are disgruntled over the mine’s decision to fire workers who took part in an illegal strike almost two months ago that resulted in a hostage situation at the time.

But, it’s still unclear if all are participating willingly or if some are being held hostage.

This is the second sit-in being staged at the mine.

In October, hundreds of workers were allegedly held hostage by the union. It’s unclear when or if the mineworkers will resurface.
