Rigger dies after falling at FNB Stadium ahead of Global Citizen

A rigger died on Saturday at the FNB stadium ahead of the much-anticipated Global Citizen Festival.

Global Citizen Global Director of Public Relations, Andrew Kirk confirmed the death of the worker in a statement.

“Yesterday [Saturday] afternoon in Johannesburg, a rigger working on behalf of a production partner for the Global Citizen Festival, suffered fatal injuries arising from a fall at the site.”

The festival said the death will be investigated.

Global Citizen has been advised that the deceased was an experienced rigger and was wearing all appropriate safety gear and equipment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated in partnership with all of the relevant local and government authorities,” Kirk said.

“Global Citizen extends our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and all of his colleagues.”

Meanwhile, the festival will go ahead as planned.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé will lead a star-studded lineup on Sunday.

The event is to mark 100 years since former president Nelson Mandela’s birth by the movement to eradicate poverty.
