Gigi Lamayne has lambasted South African celebs for not doing enough to stand with the people of Mzansi. The rapper’s comments came after US celebs flooded social media in protest of the death of George Floyd – an African American who died in hospital after a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
Gigi felt that the local celebs were not vocal enough on social media about the death of Collins Khosa, who died allegedly at the hands of the South African National Defense Force soldiers. 40-year-old Collins died on 10 April, allegedly after an altercation with soldiers and Johannesburg Metro police officers at his home. “Since we copy so much from Americans, can we at least also copy how their celebs stand with the people? I know it’s ‘not paying’ but wow!”

She urged public figures to speak up on the Collins matter. “When I say public figures must speak up on #CollinsKhosa, it is times like this. The silence and lack of a moral compass is sickening.”

She said artists had an obligation to commit themselves to fight against “the spirit that continues to contaminate us”.
“I’m no expert but I do know that we have an obligation and that is to begin to celebrate black excellence on and off social media. To unite without fractions and commit ourselves globally to fight against this spirit that continues to contaminate us. This is our struggle.”
Gigi also questioned some of the entertainment stuff that trends sometimes on twitter.
“How is this even helping our community? We can be such social media politicians when it comes to whose fashion sense sucked most but #CollinsKhosa #JusticeforCollinsKhosa some people don’t even know who that is.”
