Eskom: Pay for power or get cut off

Eskom will continue to maintain its tough stance against communities that do not pay for electricity.
That’s despite the National Union of Mineworkers protesting outside their offices.
“You have a situation where communities including Diepkloof Zone 3 have ganged up and said we don’t want an audit. So if you don’t pay for electricity, if you damage Eskom’s infrastructure then there is no way Eskom will be able to supply electricity for you,” said Eskom spokesperson, Sikhonathi Mantshantsha.
In Diepkloof, Eskom says it will only reconnect power if residents pay a reconnection fee.
The power utility wants roughly 700 households to each pay a R6,000 fine.
Soweto residents have been pleading for the restoration of their electricity after a five-month battle.
