“You don’t often come here and be disappointed with a draw, but we are disappointed,” Hunt told SuperSport TV. “I think we had two great opportunities in the first half in the first 30 seconds and we should have taken them,” he added.
“I thought we had a foot on the game and then we gifted them a goal from real sloppiness, from the left-hand side,” said the Clever Boys manager. Although the Brazilians netted first through Hlompho Kekana, the 2016/17 PSL champions equalised from a superb set piece by Keegan Ritchie.
Speaking after the match, Hunt also praised his men for displaying a great fighting spirit to ensure that they grabbed a point against the Tshwane side. “We then scored a great goal but we still had opportunities to play a final ball which we didn’t do,” he reacted.
“I’m proud of the players, to come back from 1-0 down against a very good side and we have to be proud, but I am disappointed with the draw,” said the former defender. On the other hand, the outspoken mentor came to his striker Simon Murray’s defence after he missed a number of decent goal scoring opportunities.
“You have to look at the weather first when it comes to Murray, he comes from where he comes from (Scotland) and it is very difficult to play in these conditions and he felt it today,” Hunt continued. “He was nowhere near his best. There were so many opportunities. Right at the end, he had a three on two situations. We had so many of those today,” he added.
“But we have to give the boys credit, at least we came back from a goal down, but we are really disappointed. You could see it in the players’ faces, but that’s a good sign for a good team. We don’t have the individuals, we have a good team and that is important,” he said. “Scoring goal is an ongoing problem. If you look at those situations when you get in those areas where you get the three on two when you get players that pass to the right side,” said the Cape Town-born coach.
“That is the difference between top league football and our football, and I think that’s the only difference. I think our midfield is as good as any in the world, our shape is good, things have become so much more advanced in South Africa,” lamented the coach.
“People are upping their games, but in the final third it is absolutely ridiculous that you can’t play a pass at the right time or the right weight, or the right height. I think that is something lacking in our football, something you have to continuously work on,” he said.
“We move on, another point and if you look at the weekend’s results, we didn’t lose any ground. We kept going in the right direction,” concluded the coach. With teams taking a breather due to the Fifa international break, the former Telkom Knockout Cup champions will prepare to face Highlands Park on Friday, October 26 at Bidvest Stadium.
