Gauteng’s COVID-19 battle gets boost from Cuba

After completing their 14-day quarantine, it’s now all hands on deck for the 217 Cuban healthcare workers in South Africa. Gauteng’s Health MEC has welcomed a group of 28 doctors to help the province in its battle against COVID-19. Bandile Masuku said the Cubans’ presence in the province will also help build the foundation for the future National Health Insurance. We are moving to our communities doing door-to-door and a ward-based plan in terms of the strategy,” Masuku said.

“This is also what we think will be our backbone of our National Health Insurance, because what we are hoping to build beyond this is a primary healthcare system that is able to create a sustainable healthcare system going forward. The Cuban doctors arrived in South Africa on 27 April and have already reported for duty in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
