Gauteng top cop says strides being made in curbing gang violence

Gauteng police said that although the province still faced the challenge of gang violence, strides were being made in curbing it.

Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni shared the stats surrounding the successes made by police over the past 100 days that he has been in office at a media briefing in Tshwane on Thursday.

Mthombeni said that dozens of arrests had been made in gang violence-prone areas.

“In affected areas like Westbury, Riverlea, Eldorado Park, we have since arrested 140 suspects for murder, attempted murder, robbery with firearms, and of course drugs and stolen motor vehicles.”

Mthombeni said that drug labs had also been targeted.

“We have clamped down on three drug laboratories in this period, with at least eight arrests, of which the drug labs, one was in Weltevreden Park one in Brackendowns.”
