Gauteng schools ready to reopen on Monday, says MEC Lesufi

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says all schools are ready to reopen on Monday.

He says his department has met with stakeholders and they’ve all agreed on the matter.

“We met with all the principals in our province and they gave us the green light to reopen the schools on Monday.

“We met with all the unions, including teacher unions, and they’ve also given us the green light to reopen our schools.

“So from all our education stakeholders including the SGB’s, we have received the green light and we are so proud that all of us can’t wait to welcome our little bambinos on Monday so that we can start the academic year.”

Lesufi said the number of pupils yet to be placed in Gauteng schools has been halved compared with this time last year.

He is confident all pupils will be placed by the end of February.

“One of the crucial points in dealing with the reopening of schools is the issue of admissions,” he said.

“In Gauteng, we are quite aware that we are conducting an online admission process so that we can be in a position to admit our children within our schooling facilities, especially for Grade 1 and Grade 8.”

Lesufi said the province is left with about 2,400 learners that need to be placed.

“We are quite convinced that by the end of next week we would have concluded the placement because we have ordered mobile classrooms to alleviate pressure where it’s needed.”
