SIU freezes R7.9m from companies irregularly awarded tenders to refurbish Gauteng hospital

The Special Investigating Unit has been granted an order to freeze millions in the bank accounts of two companies that refurbished the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital.
The SIU says it has reasonable grounds to believe the funds are the proceeds of unlawful activity. The hospital near Carletonville was refurbished to accommodate patients with COVID-19.
A probe found that the Gauteng government did not follow a fully compliant bidding process. Due to delays, the hospital was not available for the first, second or third wave of coronavirus infections.
