Gauteng health facilities still battling after NHLS cyber attack

Gauteng’s Health Department says its service facilities are still experiencing delays. This follows last month’s cyber attack on the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) which resulted in widespread disruption.

The Department says contingency measures have been implemented to stabilise the system. Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba urged the public to remain patient.

“The NHLS is now utilising private laboratories for critical tests focusing on emergency cases, particularly at high volume facilities.”

He adds that private labs were handling critical tests. “We have seen that as the weeks go by, there has been a bit of an improvement in terms of the ability of our facilities to cope with the demand.”

It was not immediately clear from Modiba when the department would be releasing a preliminary report on investigations into the security breach.
