Free State man arrested after police recover R2.5 million in suspected stolen electronics

Free State man arrested after police recover R2.5 million in suspected stolen electronics! A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Bloemfontein after Free State police discovered hundreds of suspected stolen electronic devices in his flat. The bust was made during a joint operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Parkweg Firearm, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods (FLASH) Unit, and the Parkweg Intervention Unit.

Link to Ongoing Robbery Cases

The operation followed the arrest of 12 suspects linked to a spate of robberies in the Bloemfontein central business district (CBD). Authorities said the aim was not only to apprehend robbery suspects but also to trace individuals believed to be buying and reselling stolen goods.

“Dedicated officers in the Parkweg area, working closely with the Bloemfontein community, have continued their efforts to uphold the law,” police said in a statement.

Discovery of Electronics in Flat

Acting on intelligence, officers visited a residential building on Alexandra Road, where they encountered a foreign national who initially refused access to his apartment. After persuading him, officers discovered ten large bags filled with various brands of cellphones, tablets, and laptops.

Initial estimates indicate that 554 cellphone units alone were recovered, with a total value of approximately R2.5 million. Authorities believe the stolen goods were intended to be transported out of Bloemfontein.

Legal Proceedings and Further Investigations

The suspect, who also owns a cellphone shop, is due to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on April 22, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property.

Police are encouraging victims of robberies to come forward with proof of ownership to reclaim their stolen devices.

Search for More Suspects

The investigation team is now on the hunt for four additional foreign nationals believed to be connected to the suspect. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected.
