Suspects linked to Fort Hare killings to appear in court
The police have made a breakthrough in the murder and attempted murder of staff at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape. Five suspects are in custody and will appear in court in Alice on Tuesday.
In January, Mboneli Vesele, who was the bodyguard of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, was shot dead while driving Buhlungu’s official vehicle.
In May last year, the fleet and transport manager at Fort Hare, Petrus Roets, was also shot dead in East London while driving home. In August last year, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) started investigating allegations of maladministration at the institution.
police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, “The management of the South African Police Service(SAPS) led by both the Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, and the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, will attend the court proceedings of five suspects, that have been arrested for a number of charges including murder and attempted murder of employees attached to the University of Fort Hare.
