The case of 10 men accused of killing two Fort Hare University employees has been postponed to 13 December for the finalisation of pending bail applications for three of the accused.
The accused appeared in the Alice Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning on charges of murder and attempted murder of Fort Hare fleet manager Petrus Roets and Mboneli Vesele, who was the bodyguard to Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu. Fort Hare’s head of investigations and vetting, Isaac Plaatjies, is the latest person to be arrested in connection with the investigation.
The arrest of Plaatjies on Friday came as a big surprise. He is the University’s Head of Investigations and Vetting and was working closely with the investigating team on the case. Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has commended the investigating team for the sterling job on this case.
“Even us, as police, we were working with Mr Platjies. He was assisting us. We didn’t expect to see that he is involved we are surprised that he is part of the people that we are looking for. Because he was close to assisting us with the investigation.”
