Former Bafana Bafana star handed five-year suspension for assault

Former Bafana Bafana soccer legend Delron Sebastian Buckley has been banned from participating in any football activities for five years. This after a video emerged of Buckley beating a match official. The incident happened after the side that he coaches, University of KwaZulu Natal, where he is now employed as a soccer coach, failed to qualify for a Varsity Cup.

Mandla Gagayi, Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee, 2023 USSA Football National Championships said, ?following the video evidence, the UKZN Head Coach and goalkeeper coach were both charged for assaulting the match officials during the 2024 USSA Football National Championships, and were each suspended from all USSA Football activities for 5 years. They were not given an option to appeal.?

The Durban-born Buckley, who was signed by German club VfL Bochum at the age of 17 spent most of his career in Germany, where he played most of his soccer career for Borussia Dortmund, FC Basel, VFL Bochum to mention a few.

Buckley spent most of his career in Germany, going through Bochum?s youth teams and debuting in the Bundesliga in 1995. He finally broke into the first squad in 1998 and remained a starter for much of his time at Bochum. Buckley came back to Mzansi to play for Maritzburg United before he was appointed as the UKZN head coach in 2021.The midfielder-cum-striker made 73 appearances for Bafana Bafana and scored 10 goals for South Africa.
