Food poisoning suspected in deaths of Soweto students

The Gauteng Department of Education says the four learners that passed away in Soweto yesterday are believed to have died after consuming food that is suspected to have been poisoned.

Three learners are from Karabo Primary School and one learner is from Khauhelo Primary School in the area.

Another grade one boy remains in ICU after also having consumed the food. In a separate incident, an eight-year-old boy from Khauhelo Primary School died after consuming snacks purchased from a spaza shop in Naledi.

Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, “Police are currently investigating circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents. The department, together with the affected schools, have already dispersed the necessary support, that is your psycho support, and just to make sure that there’s necessary counselling that is provided at the school and the families.
