KZN residents face flooding as vehicles are washed away

As heavy rains continue to batter KwaZulu-Natal, concerns over flooding and road safety have escalated, with reports of two vehicles being swept away by floodwaters in Pinetown, west of Durban.

Emergency response teams have been working around the clock as the severe weather conditions lead to multiple road accidents and heightened risks for residents.

Two Vehicles Swept Away in Pinetown

According to Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, the situation in Pinetown has become increasingly dangerous, with a sharp rise in emergency calls due to flood-related incidents.

“There are reports of two vehicles that have been washed away in the Pinetown area, west of Durban. Initial reports suggest that one of the vehicles had a family inside, while the other had a single occupant,” Jamieson stated.

The incident occurred on Stapleton Road, where a river overflowed, sweeping the vehicles away.

“The river surged from further upstream, moving towards the M7 highway near Winston Churchill Drive,” Jamieson explained.

Emergency Response and Weather Warnings

Emergency teams have rushed to the area, where roads have become impassable due to the buildup of water, soil, sand, and debris. A video clip shared by ALS Paramedics shows the extent of the damage, with rain continuing to pummel the region and emergency vehicles on standby for any further incidents.

With the threat of flash flooding, authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Driving Dangers in Flooded Areas

Motorists have been warned about the serious dangers of driving in flood conditions, as even shallow water can be life-threatening.

Key Flood Safety Warnings for Motorists:

  • Even 15 cm of flowing water can knock a person off their feet.
  • Water just 60 cm deep can sweep away a vehicle.
  • If the water level reaches the bottom of your doors or covers a third of your wheels, do not attempt to drive through it.
  • Floodwaters can clog your vehicle’s air intake, leading to an engine stall.

Flash Flooding and Bridges

One of the biggest risks during heavy rain is flash flooding—a sudden and intense flood caused by a rapid rise in water levels.

“Flash flooding is common where rivers cross low-lying bridges. Motorists should avoid crossing bridges or roads near rivers during heavy rainfall,” said an Auto & General spokesperson.

If a driver becomes trapped on a flooded road, they should:

  1. Shift to the lowest gear possible.
  2. Drive slowly and cautiously to avoid losing control.
  3. Seek higher ground immediately if water levels continue rising.

Authorities Urge Caution as Rain Persists

Weather forecasts indicate that rainfall will persist in KwaZulu-Natal, increasing the risk of more flooding and dangerous road conditions.

Residents and motorists are advised to:

  • Stay informed about weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Move to higher ground if they live in a flood-prone area.
  • Ensure emergency supplies are on hand, including torches, food, water, and first aid kits.

As emergency teams continue search and rescue efforts, authorities urge the public to prioritize safety and remain vigilant during this period of severe weather.
